Hand-stretched and pulled into bite-sized pieces, the mee hoon kuay (hand-torn noodles) are chewy and have a nice bite. Tossed in a savoury, spicy sauce, the noodles are garnished with clumps of minced pork and ikan bilis (anchovies), making the dish a simple yet comforting one.

What looks like a typical plate of chicken noodle dish is a traditional family recipe that has been handed down since 1938.
The chicken cutlets are marinated 24-hours before they’re fried to a golden-brown and served with whole egg noodles doused in a combination of broths made from over 14 ingredients, giving the dish its signature rich and wholesome flavour.

The essence of a good fish soup boils down to its soup stock and Cross Straits has nailed theirs!
Their broth has an aromatic garlic flavour and goes extremely well with the thick chunks of fish meat and chewy white noodles. To add a unique spin to their fish soup, each bowl is also topped with bits of fried egg “crusts” (the excess charred bits of fried eggs) which adds an extra oomph to the dish.

Whether you want your dumplings served with a rich mentaiko dressing, or with a slathering of melted cheese, these morsels of joy from Gyoza-Ya surely pack a punch!
Besides their gyoza, another must-try item on the menu would be the Ninniku Yaki Meshi (Japanese Garlic Fried Rice). Each grain of rice is thoroughly coated with fried egg and fried golden garlic bits, and a slight charred flavour that brings the dish together.

Tucked in an obscure corner of Shaw Centre, I Want My Noodle will give you your quick fix for freshly-made egg noodles!
We especially enjoy their Truffle Oil Noodles—springy noodles are enveloped in a braised sauce flavoured with a tinge of truffle-infused olive oil. Topped off with slices of stewed black mushrooms, a slow-cooked egg, and roasted dried baby shrimps, each bite is a wonderful play of flavours without overwhelming the taste buds.

When you see a long queue even at 11am in the morning, you know it must be good. The unassuming stall serves tze char— Chinese home-style dishes—in single portions and we especially recommend their prawn paste chicken—its meat is flavourful and succulent, and the crispy skin adds a good crunch to the dish!

If you’re craving for Thai food at affordable prices, Ofira Amazing Thai Food is just opposite Royal Plaza on Scotts! Nestled at the basement of Far East Plaza, the small stall is always packed with locals indulging in homecooked Thai delicacies.
Get a plate of Chicken Thai Basil Rice at only S$5.50 and pair it with a traditional Thai Milk Tea. This is one of the rare gems offering a full meal (including beverage) at less that S$10 in the heart of town!

If you look in the dictionary for comfort food, you’ll probably see a picture of a bowl of udon from Tsuru-Koshi Udon.
Its smooth and springy udon noodles are imported directly from Japan that is well-complemented by a light, clear broth. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, go for their Atsu Atsu Tantan Udon—chewy al dente udon served with spicy minced meat and an onsen egg.

Yentafo Kruengsonge specialises in Yen Ta Fo (Thai pink noodle soup), rice noodles served in a refreshing sweet and spicy broth and a generous portion of ingredients such as fishballs, tofu and black fungus, which makes it the perfect belly-warming meal.
While the light pink shade of Yen Ta Fo’s broth may appear gimmicky, the colour is actually derived from natural ingredients such as cooked Thai red rice and fermented red tofu.

Duck can be gamey and tricky to cook, but Bebek Goreng has mastered the art of transforming the poultry into caramel-brown meaty perfection.
Beneath its crisp exterior lay tender meat accompanied with blanched kangkong, sliced cucumber, crispy flour bits, tempeh and tahu (beancurd). But the real icing on top of the cake is the variety of sambal chili made in-house—from sambal made with green chili to sambal that’s made of sweet soy sauce with pounded chili, these sambals will add a fiery punch that completes the dish!
