Unique & Local Ice Cream Flavours in Singapore
Friday 01 June, 2018
When it comes to dessert, we don’t play favourites—cold or hot, sweet or tart—we embrace them all. But ice-cream will always have a special place in our hearts—especially those from the Orchard Road ice-cream uncles pushing their carts about.
We don’t want you to waste your calories on mediocre ice-cream. So, we put together a guide to some of Singapore’s popular ice-cream hangouts including one right at our hotel’s doorstep—award-winning Carousel buffet restaurant!

Carousel Buffet Restaurant, Tom’s Palette

Kaya Toast, Salted Egg Yolk and Chendol are some familiar tastes we know and love—but what about when it’s in the form of a cold and creamy treat?
Curious? Head down to Carousel! If you’re all about the Salted Egg Yolk life, you’ll love Carousel’s Salted Egg Yolk ice-cream. The recipe combines savoury bits of salted yolk that add a nice bite. Also give their crowd-pleaser, Chendol a shot. A blend of coconut and swirls of fragrant gula melaka—mmm… a second helping, please!

For the adventurous, hit up Tom’s Palette. The hole-in-the-wall ice-cream shop offers a wide range of classic and local flavours (including dairy-free ones). Recently, they fearlessly introduced a Nasi Lemak flavoured ice-cream, complete with coconut milk and white chocolate chunks containing bits of ikan bilis, peanuts and spices.

Awfully Chocolate

There’s chocolate ice-cream and then there’s the decadent, endorphin-inducing goodness from Awfully Chocolate.
While Awfully Chocolate is known for a number of chocolate desserts, their hēi ice-cream remains of the menu items that’s highly raved about for its rich taste and velvety texture.
Fun Fact: The Belgian dark chocolate ice-cream was named hēi (which translates to “black” in Mandarin) because of the little known fact that a Chinese emperor invented ice-cream. The chain even serves their scoops in Chinese takeout containers to remind us of this story!

Birds of Paradise, Apiary
If you’ve already read our Katong guide (nice!), you’ll already know about Birds of Paradise. We recently visited the store and fell in love with their White Chrysanthemum gelato all over again—the flecks of cacao nibs brought out the sweetness in the Chrysanthemum.
Pro Tip: Skip the cup and go for their freshly-made thyme wafer cones. You won’t regret it, we promise!

When you’re at Apiary you’ll probably notice their cosy ambience and minimal interior. Give their gelato a shot, and you’ll know why there’s a snaking queue outside their door.
Tasting the customer-favourite, Blue Milk takes you back down memory lane. Its taste is reminiscent to the Singapore childhood snack, White Rabbit Candy. And if there’s one flavour you shouldn’t get attached to, it’s their signature, the Apiary. The owners like to switch things up with this flavour—so whatever version of The Apiary you’ve tried probably won’t taste the same during your next visit. One of their previous variations was a yummy combination of honey, vanilla and bee pollen.

Cue the oohs and the aahs with the edible gold and silver wrapped around the soft-serve. If you’re feeling extra fancy, Small Potatoes Ice Creamery is where it’s at.
Serving up luscious soft-serve made fresh ingredients such as Okinawa Purple Potatoes and Hokkaido 3.6 Fresh Milk, the cones come wrapped in a very Instagrammable sheet of edible gold or silver. If you’re not into the gimmicky cone, try out their Small Potato Party which comes with Shiratama Dango (type of chewy Japanese mochi), crispy rice, purple potato sticks, green tea Warabi (jelly-like Japanese confection) and mini sweet potatoes, on top of their signature sweet potato soft-serve.

Great for the Matcha Addicts
Matchaya

Matchaya proves that you don’t need crazy toppings or flavours to keep the customers coming—you just have to focus on one niche and do it right.
In their case, Matcha was their golden ticket.
Whether it’s Matcha tiramisu, fondue, Kakigōri (Japanese shaved ice dessert) or just a plain ‘ol scoop in a cone, the dessert spot has nailed the art of Matcha. In fact, they're so dedicated to their craft that they use ingredients sourced directly from the Tea Farmers and Tea Masters in Japan.
If you’d like to enjoy the Matcha desserts from the comfort of your home, you’ll also be glad to know that Matchaya offers delivery in Singapore.

BONUS: Traditional Ice-cream Carts

Source: irememberSG
With their bright yellow and red umbrellas, it’s hard to miss these ice-cream carts. When the sun is beating down on your back, a cool creamy treat from the ice-cream uncle will feel especially shiok (Singaporean lingo to show admiration or approval, or an adjective to describe something enjoyable)!
If you’re scratching your head trying to understand some of the Singlish terms used in the image above, fret not! We deciphered it for you:
- Agak Agak - to make a guess
- Potong - a popular local ice-cream brand that first emerged in the '60s—the brand is almost 60-years-old!
