If you aren’t led to the stall by the delicious aroma of Soya Sauce Chicken, you’ll be led to it by the snaking queue of diners after the dish that gave Singapore its reputation as the ‘country with the cheapest Michelin food’ (read: a meal for less than S$5), the Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice (or Noodles)!
After being awarded the 1 Michelin star in 2016, the eatery retained the title in 2017 and till today, you can still spot Chef Chan personally preparing and cooking every single plate in his Chinatown Food Complex stall.
There are currently 2 locations that are a short walking distance from each other. However, it’s slightly pricier at their Smith Street outlet as it is air-conditioned.

2. Bismillah Biryani (Halal)

While you’re out exploring the alleys of one of Singapore’s tourist hot spots, Little India, stop by Bismillah Biryani where different variations of Biryani—a South Asian spiced mixed rice dish popular among Malay and Indian communities—is served.
Unlike regular rice, Biryani uses longer and slender Basmati rice which is lighter, fluffier, and has a nuttier taste. Bismillah Biryani specialises in Pakistani and North Indian dishes with Dum Biryani, where ingredients are sealed and steamed so that the flavours are retained.

Kam’s Roast first obtained its 1 Michelin Star in Hong Kong. Their first international branch then opened in Singapore in 2016.
Serving delicious Hong Kong-style roasted meat, their signature dishes include roasted duck, roasted meat and char siew (barbeque pork). Pair it with a bowl of white rice or their must-try ‘wanton’ noodles for a satisfied tummy!

With 25 years experience in preparing authentic Indonesian cuisine, Tambuah Mas retains its taste throughout the years. If you are tired of hawker food or expensive international restaurants, drop by Tambuah Mas for some mouthwatering Nasi Goreng Istimewa (fried rice with sausages, egg, crackers, and pickles) and their famous Tahu Telor — a bean curd omelette typically served with peanuts and drizzled with a spicy-sweet sauce. Do not be deceived by the simple ingredients as the local favourite is packed full of flavour!

6. Hill Street Tai Hwa Noodles

Besides Liao Fan Hong Kong Chicken Rice and Noodles, Tai Hwa Pork Noodles is the other cheapest Michelin-starred hawker food you can find in Singapore.
Each bowl of sambal (hot sauce) and black vinegar-laced noodles is generously served with dumplings, fried fish slices, minced pork and slices of pork and pig liver. From its humble beginnings in Hill Street drawing 20 to 45-minute long queues to its 1 Michelin Star status and hour-long queues, the stall continues to draw the hearts and hungry stomachs of many today.
While each bowl costs S$6 upwards, you may choose to upsize your bowl to the S$10 for a heartier portion of the dish!

Located in the Peranakan Museum, the elaborate decor and intricate carvings of the restaurant and its homestyle dishes will make you feel like you’re being hosted for an intimate dinner with a Peranakan family.
In fact, Chef Benjamin Seck started True Blue Cuisine with the assistance of his mother, Nyonya Daisy Seah, so you can expect authentic Peranakan food at True Blue Cuisine!

Adding on another halal restaurant to our list, Hjh Maimunah serves a mixture of Malay and Indonesian kampung cuisine.
The restaurant is well-known for its Nasi Padang where you can choose several dishes available and have it with fragrant steamed rice.
We especially recommend their Sundanese Grilled Chicken and if you’re a lover of spicy food, be sure to try their Beef Rendang! Prices are reasonable and range from S$10 to S$20 for a meal.

9. New Lucky Claypot Rice

One of the last claypot rice stalls left in Singapore, New Lucky Claypot Rice has been operating for more than 20 years. This Singaporean treasure serves rich one-pot meals with succulent meat and a robust charred flavour that many locals know and love.
A word of caution: Expect to wait up to an hour for the claypot rice during peak hours as each serving is simmered and cooked to order and simmered—ensure that the taste of the dish is retained. Priced at S$10 a pot, the portion for two is definitely one of the best in terms of taste and affordability!

If you are looking for a place to have breakfast or a light meal, Tim Ho Wan’s the place for you! Their signature dishes include their Baked Bun with BBQ pork (thick juicy chunks of BBQ meat enveloped in a crumbly bun) and Vermicelli Rolls (silky rice noodles stuffed with shrimp or BBQ meat and served with soy sauce).

An iconic national dish and a staple to many locals, Chicken Rice is recognised for its fragrant rice simmered in chicken stock and spicy garlic chilli that accompanies the dish. At Tian Tian Chicken Rice, they are famous for their tender and juicy steamed chicken.
We recommend finding a seat before ordering as Maxwell Food Centre gets crowded during peak hours at lunch and dinner. The food centre is also home to many popular hawker stalls, so be sure to try the other delicacies at Maxwell Centre while you’re there!

Only two bus stops away from Royal Plaza on Scotts, Alliance Seafood is located in Newton Circus Food Centre.
Run by two brothers, Alliance Seafood has been running for over 30 years, and is known for their Chilli Crabs and Pepper Crabs—other must-try Singaporean dishes! Be sure to order a side of Fried Mantous to go along with the dishes as the fried mildly-sweet buns go especially well with the sauce!
